Form Ideation, Wood Bending, CAD, Manufacturing

Transforming a handmade sculpture through a manufacturing process.

Ruth Asawa was known for her symbolic abstraction. The repetitive nature of her process art showed that art could be a humble, everyday thing made of low materials and processes. It could be accessible to all types of people. Hung from the ceiling, Asawa challenged the idea that sculptures were monumental and weighted to the ground. Art became a mobile, levitating thing.

Making

In creating Basket Case, I echoed Asawa’s approach to abstraction, focusing on creating sharp cast shadows. I used my homemade processes like wood bending and weaving, to embody her ideas of accessibility in art.

Final Craft

Revising in Solidworks

A year after the project was initially crafted, it was revisited. Different forms and weaving techniques were used in Solidworks, addressing the limitations experienced with the original wooden materials.
